Our Story

painting contractor in Saskatoon

Terry and Marie Wuschenny met in the summer of 1990, through mutual friends in Saskatoon, SK. Terry had to convince Marie to give him a chance, as she was busy playing sports and claimed to not have time to date. Finally, at the end of the summer, after spending time up at Marie’s family’s cabin at Greig Lake, with the same mutual friends that had introduced them, Terry convinced Marie to let him take her on a first date.

At the time, Terry was working as an Electrical technologist, and Marie was working for a friend’s business in the shipping and receiving department. They were engaged within a year and married in June of 1992.

One week after their wedding, they moved to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, where Terry had started a job working for the local utility company. Upon arrival, Marie soon found employment, working administration for an air conditioning company on the island. They enjoyed close to ten wonderful years in the Cayman Islands, scuba diving, playing softball, boating, hanging out with friends, relaxing on the beach and raising their three daughters.

In August of 2001, Terry and Marie decided to move back to Saskatchewan. Terry had grown up in Ituna, SK and Marie had grown up in Harris, SK. The majority of their family was still located within the province, making their decision easy. They bought their first house together in the small town of Harris, SK, in 2001. Terry founded a consulting company in which he contracted his services to an electrical business in Saskatoon (45 min away). Marie’s days were filled with teaching after-school sports teams at the local school, as well as running her three daughters to and from practices for every sport and extracurricular program imaginable.

Even though it was supposed to be a temporary home, Marie and Terry spent seven years in Harris, SK. In 2008, the couple decided to move to an acreage west of Saskatoon. Their daughters were older at this time, and we’re looking at attending University in the near future. Therefore the move to Saskatoon, a city home to a University, made sense. It also shortened Terry’s commute time to work considerably!

Turn of events...

In 2013, Terry’s contract with the company he’d been working for over the last ten years was terminated. Terry found himself looking for a job for the first time in over ten years. Terry quickly found new employment and over the next two years, he worked for two different electrical companies. After these two years, he found himself longing for a job that would give him the freedom to work for himself. He wanted to spend more time at home with his family and to again be leading a company.

Terry decided to use a franchise broker who put him in contact with the owner of a painting franchise. Initially, Marie thought Terry was joking when he brought up the topic of owning a painting company. In the past, Terry had never expressed any interest in painting and Marie in fact had been the painter of the family. Terry explained to her that, due to his experiences and others he had spoken with, he felt there was a lack of quality home renovation service providers in the Saskatoon area, and he wanted to change that. He believed that through this painting franchise, he could offer the people of Saskatoon a much-needed higher quality service provider. Terry wanted to offer them more than just a paint job, he wanted to provide them with a great paint job that held its quality for years, and a great customer experience.

On May 1, 2015, Terry and Marie became the proud franchise owners of a painting franchise and for the next five years, they earned the title of the number one painting franchisee in Canada for that brand.

As 2020 developed, Terry and Marie could see that changes needed to be made to meet the new reality of life during/after Covid. People were not travelling as much. People were looking to support local businesses in their own communities. And the disconnect of being part of a franchise group, as compared to being a truly local Canadian brand, became very obvious. Changes had to be made to make sure that they could stay in business and offer an even better Customer Experience to the Saskatoon marketplace. Even though they had been able to keep projects coming in and staff employed all through 2020, they could see that more was needed to be done to make their service company better overall.

In January 2021, Next Level Painting became a reality. Nothing really changed from what was offered before other than the commitment to providing a locally-minded Canadian-based painting service to the Saskatoon clients. The staff stayed the same. The same friendly faces that people were used to before were still there. But a lot of the processes were now better refined and more efficient. The connection to the Saskatoon community was made stronger.

Next Level Painting is not only about being a good company for the people that work there. Next Level Painting is about continuing to serve the clients that have been served in the past and to serve so many more new ones that will be met in the future. Next Level Painting cares about You, the client. We make sure that You get what you expect from us.
